The Disney World resort restaurants I'd put on the shortlist
None of these requires theme-park admission. The best choice depends as much on where you will be that day as on the menu.
| Restaurant | Resort | Meals | Best for | Transportation fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Topolino's Terrace | Disney's Riviera Resort | Breakfast, dinner | Destination breakfast; polished dinner | Excellent from EPCOT/Hollywood Studios via Skyliner; otherwise make it the destination |
| Sanaa | Kidani Village at Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas | Lunch, dinner | Most distinctive setting and food | Best on an Animal Kingdom or resort day; less convenient from Magic Kingdom |
| Jiko – The Cooking Place | Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge | Dinner | Adults and a true special dinner | Make it the evening destination; not a quick park break |
| Boma – Flavors of Africa | Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge | Breakfast, dinner | Buffet variety for mixed groups | Works well on an Animal Kingdom or rest day |
| Steakhouse 71 | Disney's Contemporary Resort | Breakfast, lunch, dinner | Easy Magic Kingdom-area table service | One of the easiest resort meals to pair with Magic Kingdom |
| California Grill | Disney's Contemporary Resort | Dinner | Splurge dinner and fireworks atmosphere | Best paired with Magic Kingdom or treated as the evening plan |
| Geyser Point Bar & Grill | Disney's Wilderness Lodge | Lunch, dinner | Casual reset with lake views | Good after Magic Kingdom if boat/bus timing works |
| 'Ohana | Disney's Polynesian Village Resort | Breakfast, dinner | Classic family meal; Stitch at breakfast | Convenient from Magic Kingdom on the Resort Monorail loop |
| Primo Piatto | Disney's Riviera Resort | Breakfast, lunch, dinner | Quick-service meal without a reservation | Very easy on a Skyliner route; low-friction compared with table service |
Which resort restaurant fits the day?
This is how I would narrow the list before looking at reservation availability.
| Situation | My starting pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Special breakfast | Topolino's Terrace | Strong food plus a character breakfast, without using park admission |
| Unique lunch or dinner | Sanaa | African and Indian flavors plus savanna views make it hard to duplicate elsewhere |
| Adult special dinner | Jiko | Signature Dining, South African wines and a quieter destination-meal feel |
| Buffet for a mixed group | Boma | Broad African and American selection at breakfast and dinner |
| Magic Kingdom lunch or dinner | Steakhouse 71 | The location at Contemporary keeps the transportation penalty low |
| Fireworks splurge | California Grill | The view and piped-in fireworks music make the dinner itself the event |
| Casual post-park reset | Geyser Point | Open-air Wilderness Lodge setting without Signature Dining formality |
| Classic family resort meal | 'Ohana | Easy Magic Kingdom-area pairing; breakfast is the character meal |
| No-reservation meal on the Skyliner | Primo Piatto | A useful quick-service stop at Riviera rather than another hard appointment |
Can you eat at Disney Resort restaurants if you are not staying there?
Yes. You can make dining reservations at Disney Resort hotels even if you are staying elsewhere. Disney currently also provides complimentary standard self-parking for day guests while they enjoy select dining, shopping, entertainment and recreation at its Resort hotels. Resort access can still be managed at the entrance, so having the reservation available is useful when driving.
Best destination breakfast: Topolino's Terrace
Topolino's Terrace at Riviera Resort is my first choice when breakfast itself is supposed to feel special. Disney lists breakfast and dinner at the restaurant; the character experience is at breakfast, while dinner becomes a food-focused rooftop meal without characters. Riviera's Skyliner location makes it especially convenient from EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Skyliner resorts.
Best unique lunch or dinner: Sanaa
Sanaa at Kidani Village combines African cooking with Indian flavors and views of Sunset Savanna. Disney highlights giraffes, zebras and other animals visible from the dining area or nearby overlook. This is the resort meal I would pick when I want something that does not feel interchangeable with a restaurant outside Disney.
Best adults-focused special dinner: Jiko
Jiko at Animal Kingdom Lodge is a Signature Dining restaurant serving dinner with African, Indian and Mediterranean influences and a South African wine focus. I would choose it when the meal itself is the evening plan. Disney currently says advance reservations are highly recommended and does not offer same-day bookings for this location.
Best buffet without characters: Boma
Boma at Animal Kingdom Lodge serves all-you-care-to-enjoy breakfast and dinner with African and American dishes. It works well for a group that wants variety without turning the meal into a character event. Kids can find familiar options while adults have room to try more distinctive dishes.
Best easy meal near Magic Kingdom: Steakhouse 71
Steakhouse 71 serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at Contemporary Resort. The strategic advantage is the location: it is much easier to pair with a Magic Kingdom day than a destination restaurant across property. I especially like it as a lunch break when the park is crowded and the group needs to sit down.
Best splurge and fireworks view: California Grill
California Grill is a three-course Signature Dining dinner on the 15th floor of Contemporary Resort. Disney currently lists the adult price at $99 plus tax and gratuity and pipes fireworks music into the restaurant when the show runs. This is not the meal I would book just because everyone is hungry; it is the evening's event.
Best casual resort reset: Geyser Point
Geyser Point at Wilderness Lodge serves lunch and dinner in an open-air setting overlooking Bay Lake. It is useful when you want a real sit-down reset without committing to a formal Signature meal. The Wilderness Lodge setting does a lot of the work.
Best classic family resort meal: 'Ohana
'Ohana at Polynesian Village Resort is one of the easiest recognizable family choices around Magic Kingdom. Breakfast is the character meal with Lilo and Stitch; dinner does not include characters. The Resort Monorail location makes it easier to justify on a Magic Kingdom day than a cross-property dinner.
Best quick-service resort stop: Primo Piatto
Primo Piatto at Riviera Resort is a quick-service restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is the useful counterexample to the idea that every resort meal needs a reservation. If you are already using the Skyliner, it can turn a transportation stop into a meal without creating another appointment.
Transportation should decide whether a restaurant is worth it
A restaurant can be excellent and still be wrong for the day. Resort-to-resort travel often requires a transfer, and a meal across property can consume much more time than the reservation itself. I would give a restaurant extra credit when it is already on the day's transportation path.
Driving to a resort restaurant can be easier than transferring
Disney currently says standard self-parking is complimentary for day guests while they enjoy select dining, shopping, entertainment and recreation at Disney Resort hotels. If the restaurant is the destination and you have a car, driving can eliminate the awkward resort-to-resort transfer.
How I would choose
For most trips, I would pick one or two resort meals that solve a specific problem: Topolino's for a special breakfast, Sanaa for something distinctive, Jiko for an adult dinner, Boma for group variety, Steakhouse 71 for Magic Kingdom convenience, Geyser Point for a casual reset, or California Grill when the splurge is the point. I would not cross Walt Disney World just because a ranking calls something number one.
